Need a drink to keep you warm on rainy days? Try the Filipino version of mudslide — kinutil.
Served in a segment of a bamboo pole, the drink seems harmless at first. But once you take a shot, a fire slowly simmers within you. Why would a chocolate drink make your body hot?
Kinutil, or the Filipino version of the mudslide drink, isn’t just chocolate. It’s a mix of condensed milk, chocolate (tablea), egg yolk, and tuba (coconut wine). If you want it sweeter, then you can add brown sugar before stirring. “Kutil” means “to stir,” hence the name, “kinutil.”
This drink is perfect for rainy days with bibingka or suman, but just like any alcoholic beverage, always drink in moderation.
How to Get It
This drink was offered to us by a local community in Mati City. A note, though: they don’t produce it on a daily basis. You’ll need to ask around and request for the drink.
Mati City is a 3-hour road trip from Davao City. Take the bus from the Davao Overland Terminal in Ecoland to Mati City. Vans plying the Mati route also have their terminals at Gaisano Mall, Abreeza, NCCC, and SM Ecoland.
PAL and other major airlines fly daily to Davao City from Manila and Cebu.
