Where did 2016 go? Is it just us, or time indeed just flew right across our faces? It’s approximately 30 days before the year ends and we assume some of you are ticking boxes off of your bucket lists and 2016 goals. Some may be thinking hard on what to pursue in the coming year, what new habit shall enter our lives, or what new cool hobby shall we try?
In here, you’ll find a list of cool hobbies that will surely make you giddy for 2017. So what are we waiting for? Let’s start digging in.
Do you know you could swim like a fish without the aid of heavy tanks?
Yes, you read that right. Try free-diving! It’s a relatively new sport here in the Philippines but has been a buzz on other parts of the globe. If you’re wondering if only mutants could do that, you are dead wrong, darling. It’s basically diving underwater without the hassle of equipments. The fun starts after “one breath” from the surface and off to the ocean’s depths you go. Still unconvinced? Know how they do it by getting yourself into one of their classes.
Courses are offered by several freediving schools around the Philippines such as Freediving Boracay and Freediving Coron. Don’t forget to check out their FB pages.
Not a water baby? Well, we’ve got you covered. An alternative to never going deep is going high and when we say high, we literally mean high above the mountains.
If you’ve been around, double tapping photos in Instagram, we assume you have seen countless people recently getting hooked into the adventure culture. We’re lucky that in such a paradise of a country we call home, we’re not simply known for our pristine white-sand beaches but our land abounds with towering mountaintops too.
So there’s no reason not to hop into this new hobby of seeing the world in a new perspective - over mountain summits that reveal stunning vistas.
We suggest Mt. Pinatubo, Mt. Batulao, and Mt. Pulag (Ambangeg Trail).
If you’re not a beach bum yourself and is the type of person that has some unlimited energy that warrants action, we suggest you glide over the ocean waves. And how do I do that, you ask?
We surf!!! Yes, we try surfing and not just over the weekend where you catch waves because your instructor pushed you into it. But, really, legit, as a surfer, who knows the how-tos and what-nots.
This hobby may be hard to sustain for those who are living in the city, but as the old adage goes, “Pag gusto, may paraan. Pag ayaw, may dahilan” (If there’s a will, there’s a way). Besides, most of the surfers in the Philippines today were once urban dwellers too. Try it, to believe it (smirk). But kidding aside, you’ll never know if this might lure you into making one island out of the thousands, you’re home.
Is water not your element? Earth, neither? How about we marry water and air?
If you’re up for some hybrid sports, and by hybrid we mean surfing and some kite flying. We suggest you try kitesurfing! Can you believe that kitesurfing has been a thing for ten years now in the Philippines?
The sport has been here for so long that centers offering lessons on it are found on most, if not all, famous tropical islands in the Philippines - Coron, Boracay, El Nido, Puerto Princesa, and Siargao.
Is flying your ultimate dream as a child? If the answer is a resounding yes, well, now is the time to make those dreams come true.
In 2017, let your dreams soar high as you take them Ultralight Flying. Clubs around the Philippines are offering a short trial on flying for as low as Php2000. In your first open cockpit flying, a qualified instructor will be flying with you and who knows you might be flying this thing by yourself in 2017.
