Caraga is the oldest town in Davao Oriental. At the center of the town is the San Salvador del Mundo Church which is the oldest Catholic structure in Mindanao built in 1884.
The parochial fiesta is also the founding anniversary of Caraga—a mix of 115 years of religious and cultural ties.
One of Caraga’s main attractions Pusan Point holds the distinction as the site of the first sunrise in all of the Philippines being 4 minutes advance from the rest of the country.
To celebrate the twin events, Caragueños had a series of activities like an invitational motocross exhibition participated in by motocross racers and enthusiasts from all over the country, a float parade with representatives from the different schools of Caraga depicting their history and their culture, a beauty pageant for the town’s ladies, a trade exhibit, masses held at the parish, and the eat all you can food at the residences of the Caragueños.
You know what was present in all the residences that I managed to be in? The star of the fiesta--- the lechon! Caragueños welcomed everyone into their homes with open arms and plates full of food.
Next time you travel through Davao Oriental, please do drop by Caraga and discover the beauty and bounty it has to offer.
Daghang salamat, Mayor Alicia Benitez Mori and the Caraga Municipality officials, Caraga Tourism Officer Daphney Cañete- Cordero, and Ms. Marilyn Capiña and family.
