Zamboang Hermosa Festival kicked off last October 1, 2016. Activities are jam packed for the entire month of October. One of my favorite event is the Smoke Out Grilled Food Fiesta that runs from October 1 to 11, 2016. Stalls selling freshly grilled food line up in RT Lim Boulevard every night. A stage is set up for bands to entertain the crowd as they feast on sumptuous grilled sea food, meats and burgers. On the other end of the strip, stalls selling an assortment of goods are also set up selling fresh fruits, clothes, souvenir items and other things you usually see in a midnight bazaar. The crowd is lively but well-guarded so no need to worry about your safety. Police officers are always on standby in every corner of the boulevard.
Going through dozens of stalls makes it hard to decide where to eat. If you are in Zamboanga for just a night, I can recommend my favorite stalls. Warning: you might want to ditch your diet for a short while because the food will surely make you order for an extra cup of rice!
A household name in Zamboanga, Alavar Restaurant is famous for their fresh sea food and signature sauce. This stall is great one of the most famous in the strip. Baked clams, grilled samaral, tuna fillet and chicken barbecue are just some of the items on their menu. Make sure that you go there early and have a taste of their best-selling curacha and crabs smothered in their signature sauce. You wouldn’t mind eating with your hands while eating the crabs because they tastes so good! A crab with a cup of rice, green mangoes and bagoong costs only 120.00 pesos!
If you are looking for a more youthful vibe while eating the best pork barbecue in the strip, Beermergency is the way to go. Managed by a group of yuppies, this unassuming stall serves the cheapest pork barbecue and beer. For only 16.00 pesos per stick, the barbecue is a delight for the palate looking for that home cooked taste that your mommy used to make. Marinated for hours with a special blend of spices, the pork barbecue is a perfect match with a bottle of beer which is also the cheapest in the strip for only 35.00 pesos. Other than their limited menu, the owners say that they also serve fun, youthfulness and friendship, a perfect hang out after a tiring day at work!
Tip: Only products from a beer company is allowed on the strip and it is quite hard to look for water or softdrinks in the grilled food area. Water and other non-alcoholic beverages can be bought at the midnight bazaar area on the other end of the strip.
