City folks from Manila are always looking for a getaway that’s far enough to avoid responsibilities, but near enough for convenient travel considering the traffic situation that they’ve grown accustomed to (but still despise). For this reason, Tagaytay is always a favorite locale to visit for it’s subtly cooler weather, and it’s close neighbor, Batangas, for those looking to bask in the sun and frolic in the beach.

Choose Philippines in Batangas

Batangas is known for being a diver’s paradise, but that’s not all Batangas is about. Just a mere 3 hours away from Manila sits a vast beach resort dubbed to be the Boracay of the 90’s, that hosts the Batangas Food Festival every year since 2015 around this time of the Ber season. The Matabungkay Beach Hotel has been around for decades, but they have managed to evolve their resort with the times while keeping its structures and traditions intact.

In the spirit of evolving, Ms. Charley Leviste-Antonio, the owner of MBH has mounted the Batangas Food Festival in their family’s resort as a way of moving Batangas cuisine to the forefront and putting a rightful spotlight on their local culture.

“Every year I invite guest chefs to reinterpret traditional Batangas cuisine to something more modern and more appealing to our millennials and also to introduce you to traditional Batangas cuisine”, says Leviste.

Chef Nancy Reyes-Lumen with Charley Leviste-Antonio

This year, Chef Jaja Andal, along with Adobo Queen Chef Nancy Reyes-Lumen, have prepared the menu for the Batangas Food Festival. The menu includes bistek Tagalog crostini, champayne (goat skin), and tawilis tempura for appetizers; suam na mais and bulalo with grilled bone marrow for soup options; Rodrigo’s roast, ginataang sinaing na bangus belly, crispy adobong manok sa barako, and kalderetang kambing for the mains; tiramisu ala-eh and brillantes halo-halo for dessert.

Outdoors, they have three pool areas, an archery range, a climbing wall, a zipline, a huge chess set, and for a Matabungkay treat, you can also rent a balsa, it’s a raft with a sort of nipa hut in the center where you can park your cooler of beer and just chill until the sunset.
