Helping hands are currently extended from all walks of life around the country during this hard time of fighting against the corona virus. Aside from the less fortunate families, our modern-day heroes, the medical front liners, are now the priority of some sectors for personal protective equipment and other necessary materials to help them with their continuous fight to save lives!
Because of the lack of supply of alcohol in the market, the Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan Chemistry Department created supplies of 70 percent ethyl and isopropyl alcohol for the medical front liners in Cagayan de Oro City. The alcohols were made in their laboratory and donated to Northern Mindanao Medical Center. Meanwhile, the Biology Department donated absolute ethanol to the hospital. The University is now reaching out to other departments to gather more support as they aim to have a mass production of alcohol to be given to other hospitals in the city.
Meanwhile, students and job order employees of Surigao del Sur State University Cantilan Campus are busy mass-producing face masks and shields The masks were donated to the health workers in the region. “Ang target namin is 400-500. Possibly for Cantilan, there will be 200, then we will expand production. We’ll give it to the district hospital in Madrid and to the Municipal Health Office and to other front liners throughout CARCANMADCARLAN.” said Director Juancho Intano, Campus Director, SDSSU Cantilan Campus.
The same initiative was conducted by the students of the University of Southeastern Philippines in Davao City. Through its Fabrication Laboratory (Digihub FabLab), they are fabricating face shields to be given to the frontliners of the Southern Philippines Medical Center in the city and the Davao Region Medical Center in Tagum City.
They also fabricated aerosol boxes that will shield doctors while intubating patients and covers of nasopharyngeal swabs used in COVID-19 testing. The FabLab is a shared service facility of the university, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department of Science and Technology Region XI.
This outpouring of support and sympathy will surely go a long way! Salamat at Kaya Natin ‘to, Noypi!
