Siargao’s Cloud 9 waves are Nilbie Blancada’s playground. How can she not enjoy the sport when she comes from a family of champion surfers? Her sister was the champion last year and this time, Nilbie bagged the championship.
She started seriously surfing at 15 years old. A day is no day unless she climbs on her surf board and glides on the waves. She forgets to eat whenever she’s playing until her tummy grumbles.
Preparing for the competition is a different story. The determination to win has her heading for the big waves early and is still at it until sundown. She says the thrill is in conquering a big wave, barreling inside, and gliding smoothly to a finish.
With her everyday affair with the cloud 9 waves, it is no wonder she’s a champion at 19. Nilbie Blancada… champion lady surfer.
