26 year old Binibining Pilipinas 2020 candidate Rowena “Rowee” Lucero joins the many Filipinos who have been starting initiatives that help countrymen affected of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the video-sharing app TikTok, she started a project named “TikTok Challenge For A Cause,” raising funds for families in need today.

Originally from Guiguinto in Bulacan, Rowee currently resides at Cubao, Quezon city. She’s a licensed teacher and Bachelor of Secondary Education graduate with a major in Social Studies at Bulacan State University. As she joined the nationwide pageant Binibining Pilipinas in 2019, she shares that she was first contemplating pushing through with joining the pageant, as she was experiencing a challenging time and circumstance due to her college best friend’s passing. Praying for a sign to do so, she stumbled upon an old Facebook post by her late friend encouraging her to. “Three days after he died, I checked my memories (Facebook’s “On This Day” feature), I got goosebumps when I saw Benjie’s post with a hashtag #GoForBinibiningPilipinas,” she expresses, “That’s such a clear sign I should go for it.”

With her advocacy as an Educator to strengthen the value of education in the country, the support of her family and friends, and her heart for the Filipino people, she joined Binibining Pilipinas and is now a candidate for the 2020 competition. “Since 2016, I’ve been supporting- free after school program for public school kids in the country (through the) AHA Learning Center. Along with this, it’s also a goal to enhance and capacitate our public school teachers through training and programs so that they can provide more advanced and updated approaches in education and integrate technology effectively into their teaching.”

Stepping up to help those in need under the enhanced community quarantine, this dancing beauty queen used her online presence to begin her personal initiative called the “TikTok Challenge For A Cause” through the trending mobile app TikTok, where dances, funny dubbing videos and the like are found. Here, she accepts dance challenge requests to forward proceeds to the #TogetherWeHeal donation drive by Araneta City, Amado Araneta Foundation, Binibining Pilipinas, and Ticketnet.

Initially uninterested in joining the TikTok bandwagon for personal use, Rowee shares that she felt encouraged to do so for her to help Filipinos in this unique way. With the help of her stylist and designer Simoun Andres, she weekly produces the requested glamorous dance covers as the “best dancer” awardee that she is from previous pageants. “I got the pleasure of doing it as it is not only good for my personal fitness goals but also knowing that if I will execute it properly, I will help some families too.”

With the cost of Php350 per ticket in exchange for dance cover requests from friends and supporters online, each voucher provides a food relief pack for a family in need, this includes rice, sardines, corned beef, beef loaf, and packs of noodles. Earning approximately Php16,000 on its first two weeks, Rowee's TikTok Challenge  for a Cause has helped around 45 families as of 28 April, 2018.

From translating lesson plans and modules for kids at her personal advocacy for the AHA Learning Center in Makati as a teacher to attending online live chats for pageant pages as a beauty queen, Rowee willingly dedicates a time in her busy schedule to learn, perform, and publish these dance covers as a way to help communities in means that she can.

“The pandemic has definitely affected all of us in so many ways but that should not stop us on trying to be a blessing to others,” Rowee relates “paying it forward, I know I can’t cure corona itself but I can contribute using my talents, the platform I’m in, with the help of technology and social media— I can share light and can help people who need more help. And that’s something I will always treasure and will stay with me throughout my life.”
