At 18 years old, proactive community member and actress Christine Lim started Lingap Batang Capasenos (Ayudang Gatas), a fundraising initiative that provides milk to families and children in the municipality of Capas at Tarlac, Pampanga while the area is under enhanced community quarantine. "Tayo ang mas may kaya, tayo ang may kakayahang bumuo pa rin ng magandang mundo para sa mga bata sa kabila ng matinding krisis na ating kinakaharap. (I believe this is a way to help them without any harm. We have the means, we can build a better world for the children from this crisis that we currently face.)”

Christine shares of the difficulty that local families and their children are battling throughout the season of COVID-19, and how Filipinos must continue to help each other out because of it. “Ni pagkain nga sa araw-araw ay hindi na nila makayanan, gatas pa kaya? (They don’t have enough for food, what more for milk?)”

Learning of the struggles that families have about getting milk, considering the loss of work, daily wages, and the difficulties of leaving our homes due to COVID-19, Christine was inspired to take action. “As we face and combat this pandemic and as we exhaust all the possible ways to support our health workers and elderly, let us not also forget the future of our country: the youth,” she relates.

Upon receiving multiple messages and conversing with these local families who needed milk, she tied up with her team to get things started, consulting professionals who provided the support and guidance regarding the legalities of the initiative along the way. Here, she learned that not only did children need the milk, but also other members of some families, notably the elderly ones.

“The main challenge that we face here is how we can convince others that we are not violating the PH Milk Code.” The Philippine Milk Code focuses on safe and adequate nutrition for infants by promoting breastfeeding and the proper use and distribution of substitutes and supplements if necessary. In line with this, Christine and her team continue to pursue this project and consider what was needed, such as distributing milk to respective families at home, and not to evacuees in centers or environments which is prohibited due to the lack sufficient and safe water. "Capasenos are not evacuees, in fact, they are in respective houses during the ECQ."

The fundraiser officially started on 13 April 2020 with the power of social media helping in spreading the word. Generous donors both in and out of Capas contributed to the initiative with Christine herself personally donating funds as well to purchase the variety of milk products.

As parents are instructed to coordinate with the Sanggunian Kabataan Chairperson in their area, Christine and her team worked with the SK members to distribute powdered milk packs to the families. As of 29 April 2020, the project raised enough funds to buy and distribute a total of 7,500 milk packs, catering 20 barangays and households within them receiving two powdered milk boxes each. “They were really happy," Christine relates, "Nawala bigla lahat ng puyat at pagod namin. (All the late nights and tiredness were worth it.)”

“At the age of 18, I am thinking of how I could positively impact the lives of my fellow Capasenos. To be proactive member of the society, is one of my goals,” she expresses. “But it comes with difficulties, difficulties that you need to endure for the sake of your fellowmen.

Christine hopes that her small initiative is one that motivates many others to sprout. "I hope that through my little acts, it may inspire and may serve as a stepping stone for us to work hand in hand. Always remember, if we have the means to help, help. If we have the chance to inspire, inspire. Sino-sino ba ang mga magtutulungan kung hindi tayo tayo rin? (Who else can help each other out but us?)”
