Are you planning to go to Siquijor for the Holy Week? Join Siquijodnons in their Healing Festival on March 23-26, 2016.

Siquijor is a small island province located in the Visayas region. The island is near Dumaguete City, Negros Occidental ideal for adventurous travelers and thrill-seekers. The island province boasts of its rich history and beautiful tourist attractions. You’ll find crystal clear beaches, spring parks, falls, mysterious balete tree, heritage sites, centuries-old churches and taste exotic food.

The Healing Festival in Siquijor is celebrated every Holy Week.  The ritual will take place in Bandilaan Mountain View Park at Cantabon, Siquijor. The 2016 activities started last February 12 exploring the Cantabon Cave and “pangalap.”

Pangalap is the gathering of the different kinds of herbs for 7 Fridays of the Lenten Season.

The Holy Trek on Maundy Thursday will start at Brgy. Cang-agong going up to Mt. Bandilaan.  You’ll get to witness the “pag-adlep” where the gathered herbs are chopped at the site and some at the healers’ houses and designated places of group of herbal makers.

Then on Black Saturday, it is the day of cooking and brewing of herbal medicines of different healers and herbalist group.

How to Get There

Siquijor has three ports located at Larena, Lazi, and Siquijor. The main port, Larena, can accommodate large ships.

From Manila, you can fly to Cebu (estimated cost of Php3,000++, round trip, 45 minutes). You can also fly to Dumaguete (estimated cost of Php4,000++, round trip, one hour and 15 minutes) or Tagbilaran since there is no direct flight from Manila to the island of Siquijor.

I'd suggest that you go for the Manila-Dumaguete flight. From Dumaguete, ride a ferry to Siquijor. Delta Fast Ferries is the main ferry that operates the Dumaguete-Siquijor route (estimated cost of Php200++, one-way, 45 minutes). You can also get Oceanjet Ferry (Php350++, one-way, 45 minutes) or Weesam Express.

Usually the ferries leave Dumaguete City at 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The Siquijor to Dumaguete trip leaves at around 5:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Then from Siquijor, Siquijor port, you may take a tricycle ride or you may contact Siquijor Tourism Office at (035) 344-2088 for the tour (tour package rate: Php1,500).
