In times where people feel safer riding a bicycle to go to places, it is important to use protective gear in order to safeguard your life against hazardous occurrences. For instance, safety vests or reflective sashes will help reduce road accidents significantly. As the name puts it, safety vests guarantee an individual’s safety while on the road. They are made in such a way that they can be seen in enough distance to enable the wearer to avoid collisions.
In Davao City, cyclist Mavi Novelero opted to treat than be treated on her birthday. She fulfilled her birthday wish to provide protection to bikers including frontliners in the city by distributing reflective sashes to make them more visible, especially during nighttime. What makes the reflective sash extra special is that Mav personally sews it with the help of her sister and friends.

“Kita Ka,” a non-profit initiative by U.P. Mountaineers and Tiklop Society of the Philippines that seeks to advocate bicycling as an environmental-friendly mode of transportation amid the pandemic, inspired Mav to conduct the same initiative in Davao City to mark her 30th birthday last June 9. The group members already distributed reflective sashes for free along 6 areas in Luzon and hope that more bikers, like Mavi, will expand the advocacy to many areas in the country.
Mav, on the other hand, commits to continue the project and hopes to gather volunteers who can help distribute in different areas and supporters who can donate materials. Interested volunteers and supporters may reach out to Mavi Novelero on Facebook.
