The coronavirus pandemic has caused a special type of heartbreak for entrepreneurs looking to start new businesses. In addition to dealing with the many health and social issues brought on by the virus, they have faced the abrupt collapse of a near-perfect set of conditions for startups. But, hope shines a light on a Davao City-based basketball hottie to take a shot and start a small business!

Phillip Given Yaco is a fresh graduate from a University in Davao City. Unfortunately, he cannot apply for any course-related jobs because of the economy’s current situation. Instead, he experimented in the kitchen to make products he can sell online. Thus, he was able to produce his very own Creamy Carbonara, Creamy Mango Tapioca, Creamy Mango Tapioca with Oreo, Spicy Pork Binagoongan, and Chicken Garlic Oil. It came as a surprise for him to become a kitchen buddy. Before the pandemic, he used to star in basketball leagues and modeling gigs.  “I don’t want to waste a day and time with nothing to do,” Philip shares, “I learned that in business, you should take a risk and be patient. You need to have proper knowledge about your products so that you will earn even a little amount to support your needs.”

While others seem to be shy to take on paths different from what they originally planned, Philip didn’t hesitate to start something far different from where he should be right now, “Before the pandemic, I was fortunate to have modeling gigs. Plus, I finished Tourism Management so I wanted to pursue my dream of working on first-class companies but because of our situation, I was forced to sell products online. I am proud of what I am doing because I am not harming anyone at the same time, I get to showcase my talent in the kitchen and marketing,” shared Phillip.

Truly, his diskarte is equivalent to an additional one million pogi points for this basketball hottie turned entrepreneur! Philip encouraged others, especially his fellow young adults, to step up and play in the game of life, “Honestly, it’s so tiring but you should have a positive outlook and guts in business. Hard work, patience, and determination are always the winning formula in business. Start with a small business and make it grow and one day you realize, you also grew as a person.” Aside from his food products, he’s now re-selling other items and at the same time, help promote his friends’ small businesses.
