21 PH Destinations That Share The Same Name With Other Local Spots
Choose Philippines | July 10, 2017
We all know it too well— Philippines, with its more than 7,000 islands, has a couple of them that sound too alike.
Don't get these places all mixed up, especially if you've been to a place that share the same name with an island situated in another province:
Talisay Island, Tinalisayan Island, and Talisayen Cove
Talisay means ‘beautiful’ in the Filipino languange. This name has been used quite a lot. Well, we can’t blame them. There are too many spots in the Philippines that hardly shy away from what is considered ‘beautiful’. From islands, mountains, waterfalls, caves, and coves, we just can’t get enough of this paradise country. So to end the confusion, there is Tinalisayan Island in Masbate, Talisayen Cove in Zambales, and lastly, but definitely not the least, Talisay Island in El Nido, Palawan.

Tinalisayan Island, Masbate
One of the best islands in PH, but then what do I know? How many have I been to out of the 7,641 islands (NAMRIA) that we have? So maybe it's safe to say that this small pocket of wonder in Masbate is one of the few islands I'd find myself going back for, after a few tens of islands I've been to. ????
Talisayen Cove, Zambales
It seems that when an island is relatively unexplored, locals and foreigners alike would just call it the ‘Virgin Island.’ Usually places that are called virgin are pristine and royal, from its lush vegetation, waters, and shores. There’s two: One in Cebu, and the other in Bohol which is now known as the Isola de Francesco.

Sombrero is a Spanish term for ‘hat’ and with our history with Spanish colonialism, Filipinos have used this term more than its local translation. Islands named as 'Sombrero' almost always resemble a shape that of a hat. We remember there are three in this country. There’s one in Batangas, in Iloilo, and in Masbate.

"You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore" So thankful for His promise that He will be with me wherever I go. It gave me the #COURAGE to lose sight of the shore. I will not be shaken for I know He will never leave me nor forsake me as I cross this vast ocean. #ResignedFromWork #joshua1v9 #hebrews13v5 #psalm62v6

Apo Island, Apo Reef, and Mt. Apo
Apo translates as “granchild” in the local language. There seems to be something special about calling a place “Apo.” The highest point in the Philippines is called Mt. Apo which is found in the province of Davao. In Occidental Mindoro, we find one of the most beautiful and richest marine biodiversity in Apo Reef. Lastly, there is an island in Dauin, east of Negros Oriental, that houses marine protected sea turtles which is known as Apo Island.

Balagbag Island, Balagbag Falls, and Mt. Balagbag
“Where do we go this weekend?”, your friend asks. You say, ‘“Balagbag” but then your friend wonders if it’s in Quezon Province or Camarines Norte? The island or the waterfall? Or is it the mountain? Balagbag means “placed crosswise” in the local language. The island is located in Calaguas in the province of Camarines Norte, the waterfalls is in Quezon, and lastly, Balagbag’s peak is in Norzagaray, Bulacan.

Tinago Falls and Tinago Hills

On the other hand, Tinago Hills located in the province of Camarines Norte, is one that is not much hidden with it’s wide open spaces in slopes, giving a phenomenal view of Mahabang Buhangin beach of the well-known Calaguas Island.
