What is Poi?

Metro Manila

Paulino Servado III | Oct 04, 2013

Poi is a wonderful performance art that originated from the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand centuries ago. In modern times, poi has evolved into a multi-faceted art form enjoyed worldwide, and one of the 'flow arts" ( "that blends meditation, dance, exercise and play into a fun and healthful activity that moves the body and stills the mind" (thank you Burning Dan!). A great form of exercise, movement meditation and creative expression for people of all ages!

Falling under the alternative hobby/exercise category of 'Juggling', 'Object Manipulation' or the 'Flow Arts', POI as an activity creates a unique path to exploring and improving one's mental, physical and spacial awareness and capabilities, making it beneficial to both body and mind. Physically, it is a great way to improve one's hand, eye and body coordination, flexibility, muscle endurance/toning and is the perfect low-impact cardiovascular work out for people of all ages.

POI also promotes self-awareness, builds confidence and increases social inter-connectedness through performance, by fostering a sense of community and personal knowledge sharing. Unlike forms of structured sport or dance, POI continues to evolve, by drawing from influences in the martial arts, other performance arts and meditative movement disciplines, such as Yoga and Tai-chi.

This unique fusion of different arts and disciplines, allows people to create their own form of self-expression, through a process of exploring, learning and internalizing movements, that they then individualize and express through their own personal style of poi spinning.

Poi's unique multi-faceted nature makes it that much cooler and more fun to do, either alone or with friends! We welcome everyone to give POI a go and hope to spread the wonderful dynamism, free flowing energy and balance that it has brought into our lives.
