Choose Philippines | Dec 15, 2015
The University of Santo Tomas, founded in 1611, is known as the oldest existing university not only in the Philippines but in the whole Asia. It is the largest Catholic university in the world and the largest university in Manila. Another claim-to-fame is that it was the only university visited by three popes: Pope Paul VI (in 1970), Pope John Paul II (in 1981 and 1995). and Pope Francis (last January).
Aside from these titles, the Pontifical and Royal University is also famous for the Paskuhan, an annual tradition that started in 1991. It is the culmination of UST's Christmas activites. Highlights include the Agape (campus-wide banquet) along Osmeña Drive, a concert at the Grandstand and Open Field, the Paskuhan Mass presided by the university rector, and a grand fireworks display to cap the celebration.
The university's wonderful spectacle of lights and Christmas decors also entice students and outsiders to visit the instituion come Christmas time. The iconic Christmas tree right next to the Grandstand has a different design every year. For 2015, it features wooden structures that imbibe simplicity and sustainability.
This year's Paskuhan will be held on December 18. The University of Santo Tomas is located in Sampaloc, Manila.
