It’s been said countless times how Filipinos are able to smile amidst hardship. Well, that will definitely be true for the upcoming Manila Improv Festival this coming March 22 to 26.

Happening on March 22 to 26

You see, improv is the technique wherein actors perform live onstage. However, the catch is that the plot, dialogue, and characters are all made up in the moment, and is more interactive than traditional theater, as the actors often seek help and suggestion from the crowd in order to fuel their performances. Also, oftentimes, due to the spontaneous nature of improv, it’s very, very funny.

And because Filipinos are so adept at making each other smile, the Philippine Educational Theater Association had decided to host the upcoming Manila Improv Festival in March.

First established in 2004, the festival has already seen supporters from both audiences and fellow improv actors from all over the world, and the festival functioned as a conference of sorts to invite established talents, as well as inspire and nurture new ones.

For its iteration this 2017, the festival will feature performances by international improvisers from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Osaka, Tokyo, Mumbai and Brisbane, as well as showcase Filipino improvisers from Manila, Bacolod and Cagayan de Oro.

Some of the groups include: The 4th Players, a Manila-based improv group and one of Third World Improv’s featured house teams; One and a Half Men Improv, another Manila-based group, and was the first Manila-based improv group to have been composed of students; and Singkit Improv, a group based in Binondo, known for their usage of their unique Chi-Fil heritage in their performances. Of course, with 31 groups from all over the Philippines and the world, it would be impossible to list them all here.

Here’s a taste of what the Manila Improv Festival 2015 was like, featuring the improv performances of the Pirates of Tokyo Bay:

Third World Improv and the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) present the Manila Improv Festival 2017 from March 22 to 26 at the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City. This year’s festival will feature performances by international improvisers from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Osaka, Tokyo, Mumbai and Brisbane, and showcase Filipino improvisers from Manila, Bacolod and Cagayan de Oro. This year’s festival is poised to attract an estimated 150 delegates and 4,000 guests to the 38 shows and 5 workshops at PETA’s performance venues. Tickets and festival passes to performances and workshops are available through the PETA Theater Center.
