TEATRO PORVENIR: Dulaang UP’s offering for Bonifacio’s Sesquicentennial

Wrtitten by Tim Dacanay, this Palanaca winning play will be given life by Dulaang UP comes November intime for the celebration of 150th birth Anniversary of Andres Bonifacio popularly tagged as Ama ng Katipunan (Father of the Katipunan). Bonifacio is highlighted in the play as a theater artist and its role in the history of Katipunan.
The play will start by introducing komedya, a 100-year aol theater form adapated from the Spanish comedia with cast memebrs includes Andres Bonifacio, hist brothers Circiaco and Procopio, Macario Sakay and Aurelio Tolentino. A wide reader, Bonifacio and other members of the troupe were influnced by the subversive plays of Jose Rizal and they are trying to change and give variations to the forms of komedya and senakulo.
Under the direction of Alexander Cortez, the play will to give a new breathe of life and interpretation to the life of Andres Bonifacio as an artist and father of the Katipunan movement. The artistic team includes Floy Quintos as the creative consultan. Ohm David and Meliton Roxas will mange the technicals. The play will be scored by Jethro Juaquin and the set will be brought to life by Hongkon-based designer Faust Peneyra. Nimrod Sta. Ana will do the costumes. Incorporation of komedya choreography will be crucial in the play and having steps like batalla will be more close to “authentic” with the help of true blue komedya actors from San Dionisio Parañaque and Don Galo, Grace Jaramillo and Jess Nazarene Macatuggal. Angel Lawenko-Baguilat of the UP Dance Company will also do the choreography. Winter David will do the video design and Erika Estacio is the dramaturg. Poster design is by the playwright itself, Tim Dacanay and graphics by Renee Balboa. Dino Dimar will handle the photography.
Cast will include Romnick Sarmenta, Russell Legaspi, Jojit Lorenzo, Joel Saracho, Fitz Bitana, Jean Judith Javier, Karen Gaerlan, Natasha Cabrera, Fatima Cadiz, Nikki Lorenzo, Emerald Bañares, Paul Jake Paule, Cedrick Juan, Io Balanon, Dan de Guzman, Janel Estuya, and the Dulaang UP ensemble.
Teatro Porvenir will run from November 20 to December 8, 2013 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman.
