If you happen to be traveling with children in Boracay and decide to spend a side trip offering more than just the usual sun and sand then you might want to consider The Sampaguita Gardens Resort.

The brainchild of Samuel John Butcher, an American artist and creator of Precious Moments artworks that promote messages of loving, caring and sharing, the resort is basically the mansion grounds hosting a resort, an amusement park and a doll museum.

The establishment has 24 standard rooms, 6 Deluxe Rooms and 5 Executive Suites, 2 Garden Cottages, 2 Family Suites and a Honeymoon Suite.

Guests get a complimentary breakfast and wi-fi internet access, cable, swimming pool and fitness center, free entrance to the Samuel J. Butcher Mansion and the Precious Moments Gallery.

Among the attractions for kids (and we believe the young at heart) will enjoy are Jojo's Christmas Cottage, a 3-storey Victorian building with a year-round Yuletide theme and the Precious Moments Gallery featuring collections of bisque figurines and collectible plush dolls.

There is also a showcase of personal items belonging to Sam Butcher (outside be sure to to look for the 1918 Ford Model T, the world's first mass produced car); a 43 foot aquarium; a butterfly farm and an amusement park with a merry-go-round, Ferris Wheel and a mini-train.

Dining establishments include the Oriental Flavors, a fine dining restaurant that serves Asian dishes, mainly Thai and Chinese cuisine - open for lunch and dinner; Sir Sam's Ristorante - which is basically the breakfast restaurant and open from 7 to 11am; the Poolside Pavilion and Coffee Town - a European style cafe.

Rates start from Php 1890 / single occupancy for a standard room to Php6350 for a Family Suite or a Garden Cottage. For large groups there is a dormitory-type Gallery Room (Php 7050/ night) which can host 15- 20 persons.

Located in New Washington, Aklan, Sampaguita Gardens Resort is a two-hour drive away from Boracay and transportation can be arranged from nearby Caticlan. The Manila office of the resort is at 8427 Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City (8:30am to 5:30pm/ Mon-Fri) with phone no. (63 2) 8978709. They also have a US toll free no. (1 8777) 839-4128.
