Mention Albay and the first thing that comes to mind is the majestic and enchanting beauty of Mayon, the only volcano in the world with a near-perfect cone. Come period of tranquility or period of turbulence, Mayon dominates the province’s landscape, front and center.
But there are other delightful things that you can enjoy in Albay aside from the sights. Best of all, you can bring some of them with you when you go home. Here are 5 culinary delights that are proudly and absolutely Albayanon:
5) Sinarapan of Polangui
Sinarapan (Mistichthys luzonensis) is considered as the world's smallest commercially-harvested edible fish. Thriving in the waters of Danao Lake in Polangui, this is best cooked as ukoy (fritters).
4) Pinangat of Camalig
There’s something in that combination of fresh taro leaves, creamy coconut milk, a few grams of pork or crabmeat or shrimp, and the assortment of flavorful spices that makes you crave for more of pinangat. So much so that it has spawned its own industry.
If you’re driving along the main street of the town of Camalig, it’s hard to miss all the stores on both sides of the road selling pinangat and inulokan (pinangat with crab meat or ulok inside).
3) Albay Ice Cream Collection of 1st Colonial Grill in Daraga
The flag bearer in this selection is the fiery sili ice cream, with spiciness levels ranging from 1 to 10, but there are other flavors that are equally mouthwatering.
From tinutungan to pili to gabi to malunggay, there are now about 13 flavors, enough to satisfy your discriminating palate. They’re available in small cups and in half-gallon containers if you wish to take them home with you.
2) Adelina’s Choco with Pili
Named after Governor Joey Salceda’s mother, this heavenly confection of chocolate and pili is Albay’s newest product. This is best as pasalubong for your loved ones, as well as to satisfy your sweet cravings. Available at the Pasalubong Center in Camalig.
1) Guinobatan Longganisa
Don’t be fooled by its small size. This longganisa or pork sausage definitely packs a wallop when it comes to taste. It comes in regular and spicy flavors and is definitely irresistible.
