Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. revealed that DOT will be developing Davao as the “largest fruit market in Asia”.
Secretary Jimenez said that the decision springs from a frequently asked question: Where does this fruit come from? And the answer is always Davao. So they finally decided, that Davao host the largest fruit market in Asia.
The Davao Region (Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental and Davao City) is home to large plantations of banana, papaya, pomelo, durian, pineapple, mango and a host of other fruits.
Tourism Assistant Secretary for Mindanao Arturo Boncato Jr. said that the fruit market is scheduled to be opened by the second quarter “to jump-start the project in time for Visit the Philippines Year 2015.” Abreeza Mall, owned by Ayala Land Inc., has generously provided for free for two years, the 2,000-square-meter outdoor space for the market.
Aside from offering fresh fruits, it will also have processed fruit products, fruit-based products and food and beverage services.
