The Land of Maples has fascinated the Filipinos with Hollywood stars and singing sensations--Anne Murray, Paul Anka, Dan Aykroyd, Bryan Adams, and more recently Celine Dion and Justin Bieber.

These Canadian thespic and musical talents has spilled over, too, in a realm which is traditionally the bulwark of Italian culinary supremacy -- pizza. The good news is, fanatics who are always in the hunt for new twists in their favorite pan comfort food have more reason to rejoice with the recent arrival on Philippine shores of the famed Canadian brand, Steveston.

Named after its place of origin in a township in Richmond, British Columbia, the store opened its first outlet at Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City last summer to cater to the Pinoy’s insatiable appetite for pizza.

Claiming itself to be an “artisan pizza,” Steveston was established by Nader Hatami, once a top sous chef for the prestigious Holland America Cruise Line.

Master franchisee Richard Go, who also brought to the country another popular Canadian food chain, Cheesecake Etc., said the new brand wants to offer the discriminating urbanite population not just the another pizza, but one that is a “work of art” both in its look and in taste.

He said that Steveston is noted for using only the choicest, fresh ingredients, which combines of peppery arugula, salty anchovies, sharp capers, creamy mozzarella, and tomato sauce to come up with a flavorful and satisfying creation.

Go said connoisseurs can sink their teeth into a wide array of flavors which cater to every preference—meat, fish, chicken, vegetable, shrimp, spicy—which take pizza dining to the next level.

He noted that their pizzas are not oily, and use only natural ingredients, so diners can savor the natural flavor in every bite.

He added that Steveston even dares to cross territorial boundaries so as to create fusion pizzas such as Mexican, Canadian, and Hawaiian to emphasize that the Italian staple is indeed a global delicacy.

Having been to the country to set up its pioneer overseas branch, the celebrated chef Hatami has seen the Filipino dining preference and the uniqueness of the local cuisine, and is keeping his options open for new pizza flavors inspired by all-time Pinoy favorites.

By then, we can sample fusion pizzas laden with longganisa, pakbet, laing, tapa, or Bicol express.

With its wide array of unique flavors, Steveston Pizza will brighten the feast table with family and friends this Christmas, New Year, and beyond.
