A proud transgender woman, the beautiful Mela Habijan has done it all! She ran for the Marikina City Council in 2016, is a writer for ABS-CBN who’s worked with hit shows such as Gandang Gabi Vice, The Buzz, Simply KC, and Your Face Sounds Familiar, and is more recently known as a host and artist, breaking new ground on our screens throughout the new era of inclusive and diverse media with her most recent project with iWant film, Manilenials. But wait, there’s more to what this girl is ready to bring on into the world!
Like many of those in the creative industry, the quarantine period of COVID-19 has canceled most of her 2020 projects. Still, Mela uses this time as an opportunity to start Miss Mela’s Peanut Butter, an all-new variety of homemade, quality peanut butter. “That’s why Ms. Mela’s Peanut Butter was born, because of this quarantine. Parang this was my coping mechanism because all of my work, my gigs got canceled so I got creative.”
With its homemade with love goodness, we can’t help but get takam and ask, why peanut butter? Mela responds, “I love peanut butter. It’s one of my top three comfort food. Number one is champorado, number two is lumpiang shanghai, and number three is peanut butter!”
While spending her quarantined-life at home, she stumbled upon the idea to venture into what she loves. “While I was reflecting on life siguro, I saw peanut butter. Maraming salamat sa Lily’s Peanut Butter. (Many thanks to Lily’s Peanut Butter.) Tapos sabi ko, “Shocks, alam mo, this peanut butter always makes me happy. Why can’t I create my own?” So I called my mom who is a business-minded person. Sabi ko sa kanya, “Gusto ko mag-business—peanut butter.” Tapos sabi niya, 'Sige, gawin natin.' And then nagulat na lang ako two days after, mayroon na siyang ginawang peanut butter," she recalls. "Sabi ko, “Oh my God, ang nanay ko talaga,” as in. She does what she says, ganon siya. She’s a woman of action and that’s what I want to inherit from her. (I told her I wanted to start a peanut butter business to which she said “let’s do it.” I was surprised two days after to find that she’s made peanut butter.)
After starting the recipe with her mom Irene, Mela refined it and planned everything out for this venture. Her process included research via online surveys and feedback of flavor from her trusted friends. Within two months, Mela introduced her array of homemade peanut butter, all ground, cooked, and packed on her own- nothing says made with love more than homemade goodness! Like her mom, Mela’s definitely paved her way as a woman of action herself!
The variety of peanut butter flavors include classic favorites such as creamy original and chunky, along with choco-nut (for the chocolate lovers out there!), and coco-nut, Mela’s personal favorite. “It lets you experience the goodness of coco jam in peanut butter. So parang na-experience mo yung coco jam but it’s peanut butter. (It’s like experiencing coco jam but it’s peanut butter.”
