Times right now are incredibly difficult for many people. In the Philippines, these are moments where our value of being madiskarte: to adapt and be creative when the moment calls for it shines through! Diskarte is about the Filipino going out of their comfort zone and taking a risk.
One of the most inspiring examples is Boding Factura from Cagayan de Oro. Boding’s delicious “Tuna Pie” trended on social media and became an instant hit in the city. He makes the tuna pie and carries it from place to place and sell all by himself. Also, he delivers his tuna pies for free within Macasandig, Nazareth, and Divisoria in Cagayan de Oro.
In an interview on Pamahaw Espesyal, ABS-CBN’s local morning show in Cagayan de Oro, Boding shared that selling tuna pies is one of his ways to survive especially during these challenging times with a child having special needs. “Sa sitwasyon karon sa tibuok kalibutan naman jud ni pati akong misis sa abroad nga provider namo naglisod sad sa laing nasud. Lisud kaayu! Pangwarta, oras, pasensya so dapat mangita gyud og diskarte." (People around the world really experience difficulties, including my wife abroad who stands as our provider. It’s very difficult! Source of income, time, and patience that’s why I need to find ways.)
He admitted that he did not expect that his tuna pie will be appreciated and become a hit, “Kaluoy sa Diyos nihalin biya! Wala ko nagdahom ani," he shares. (By God’s grace all my tuna pies are sold-out every day! I did not expect this!) Now, Boding produces around 100 to 160 pieces of tuna rolls every day which is sold at P40.00 for 3 pieces. Boding even gave free tuna pies to people on the street and police frontliners.
Diskarte is a reflection of the will and determination that lives within all Filipinos to make the best of their given situation. Iba talaga ang Noypi! #SupportLocal
