Be Ready For An Epic Road Trip: Travel Via Bus From Luzon To Mindanao

Despite being a small country, a majority of the Philippine islands are still widely separated by vast oceans. This essentially makes travel by land difficult, and air travel is often the more practical choice among travelers pressed for time. However, despite its difficulty, traveling the islands of the Philippines is not impossible: in fact, here's a guide to give you an idea on how to drive or travel on bus from Luzon, to Visayas, and going to Mindanao, all within a week. So pack your bags now and be ready for an epic roadtrip.

Day 1: Manila to Legazpi, Albay (about 8-12 hours)

Luzon's own piece of paradise!

The journey starts in Metro Manila. The route will take you across Las Piñas, Laguna, Quezon Province, Camarines Sur, and you will eventually end up in Legazpi, Albay by nighttime. The first RORO ferry will leave Matnog Port early in the morning.

Day 2: Legazpi, Albay to Tacloban, Leyte and Liloan Port (about 12 hours)

What's so special about the longest bridge in the Philippines?

The RORO ferry from Matnog Port leaves as early as 9:30AM, and it takes about an hour and a half for it to arrive in Allen, Samar in Visayas. The drive to Tacloban, Leyte will take you across Visayas, passing along the longest bridge in the country, San Juanico Bridge. The drive from Allen, Samar to Tacloban takes about 7 hours, with an additional 5 hours to get from Tacloban to Liloan Port, which will take you to Mindanao.

Day 3: Tacloban, Leyte to Davao City (about 19 hours)

Have you ever ridden a habal-habal?

From Liloan Port, the ferry leaves as early as 8AM, and takes about an hour to cross from Leyte to Surigao. From Surigao, it takes about 8 hours to arrive in Davao City. Once you’re there, you’re free to stay as long as you want, and come back at your own leisure!

(Optional) Day 4 to Day 7: Stay longer in the islands and explore them before you ferry yourself to the next!
