Another Watersport Sweeps Into Siargao: Wakeboarding
Ida Damo | Dec 20, 2018
Siargao may be popular for its world class waves in Cloud 9, but there are a lot of watersports to choose from in the island. You can go paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and diving.
Signs were everywhere in Siargao and TV Patrol Butuan made a feature of it. Since I was in the island already and Magpupungko tidepools had huge waves and not conducive to visitors, we opted to visit the wakeboarding park before heading to another destination.
In the middle of the coconut groves in Consuelo, are two lakes connected by a pool gap. Here, a lone man starts down on a board then gets up and balances himself while cables propel and let him glide through the water. Or simply, wakeboarding.
Wakeboarding is defined as riding on a short, wide board resembling a surf board while performing some acrobatic moves and being towed behind a motorboat. But at Siargao WakePark, there is a 2-tower cable system that tows the rider.
The main lake is 100 meters long and 30 meters wide. Here, sessions for the beginner, intermediate, and experienced riders are done. Each session would take 90 minutes under a professional instructor. Yes, you read it right, 90 minutes because when you are on the water, 60 minutes would prove to be too short.
There are no limits as to who can learn wakeboarding in terms of age as long as you have the basic swimming skills. How fast one learns depends on your determination.
Another plus is that wakeboarding can be done anytime of the year except when there’s heavy rain and storms.
Please book and pay your wakeboarding session at www.siargaowakepark.com and after, be there 30 minutes before allotted time to register and to prepare/get equipment.
So get on the board and feel the rush of one of Siargao’s newest watersports at the WakePark.
How to get there:
Major airlines now have daily flights to Siargao from Manila, Cebu, and Davao. Siargao Wakepark is located Brgy. Consuelo. Coming from General Luna you go into the direction of Dapa. Halfway, you go right on the first big intersection. After 400m look on the right hand side for the Wakepark sign. It's a 10min drive from General Luna, or 20min from Cloud 9 area. Public transport is possible and the drivers will know where to go. A motorbike or "Habal-Habal" and tricycles are are easy to find. You can find the location on Google Maps and Facebook for more directions.
