Mindanao's Oldest Catholic Structure

Davao Oriental

The inscription on the main door of the El Salvador del Mundo church in Caraga, Davao Oriental bears a Christ symbol and dates the structure back to 1884.

The current church is made from stone rubble and stands on a high limestone promontory that provides a spectacular view of the sea.

The church has been recently renovated in time for its centennial. While its exposed narra hardwood posts can still be seen, its old retablos and roofing have been replaced by modern materials.

It was sad that we were not allowed to enter the church as the parish priest was not there. We would have wanted to say a prayer for our safe journey to and from Davao Oriental.

Even so, it was still worth seeing the oldest Catholic structure and get close to a piece of history.

How to Get There:

Davao Oriental can be reached from Manila and Cebu by taking any of the daily scheduled airline flights to Davao City. From Davao City, Caraga, Davao Oriental is accessible via 41/2-hour private car ride or a 5-hour public utility bus or van ride on a fully concreted highway.

Bus and Van rate range from Php 400-500.
