Ida Damo | Jul 20, 2016
Compostela Valley Province in Mindanao, spanning 4,479.77 square kilometers, is divided into 11 municipalities, namely: Mawab, Maragusan, New Bataan, Monkayo, Nabunturan, Compostela, Montevista, Maco, Mabini, Pantukan and Laak.
The province is known for its gold, silver and other mineral deposits. Hidden in its vast forests is the largest flower in the world, the rafflesia, and other flora and fauna.
Situated in Monkayo is Awao Waterfall which is a must-visit for backpakers.
To get to the waterfall, one has to endure a long and bumpy habal-habal ride and an ardous trek. There's also a need to cross rivers and creeks.
Awao is regarded as a tiered waterfall and one of its tiers is 20 meters high. Its white water cascading over rough black canyon is truly a sight to behold.
Going under its spray gives a relaxing and massaging feeling.
There is another tier of falls for the more experienced adventurer that is waiting to be discovered, so when you're in Compostela Valley, visit Awao and see it for yourself.
