The Compostela Valley is a rich mining ground in Mindanao. In the 1,000-metre high range of Mt. Diwata otherwise known as Diwalwal, is a rich gold ore deposit which prompted a gold rush in the 80s.
Alongside the mining of gold is silver, which is a by-product of refining gold.
The current price of silver is at PhP 735.66 per ounce (31.1 grams); 1 kilogram at PhP23,652.02 and 1 gram at PhP 23.65. The price changes every now and then depending on the market.
Comvaleños, through time, have developed the ability to turn a piece of metal into jewelries with intricate designs.
Silversmiths have created necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings that can give other makers of jewelry in the world a run for their money.
During the Bulawan (Gold) Festival, proud silversmiths display their creations at the Provincial Capitol building.
Since one can buy directly from the makers, you can haggle with them on the price of the jewelry that you want to purchase. It is very helpful if you have knowledge on how the jewelry prices are determined.
Mining can be a controversial subject but truly, the creativity of the Comvaleño silversmiths is something to be proud of!
