Renzelle Ann Palma | Aug 13, 2013
Monchet Y Cia fans follows the traditional Hispanic style of fan making learned from the master fan makers in Madrid.
Hand shaped, cut and scrolled in the artisanal “callado” and made with a variety of Filipino fabrics such as “pina-seda” or pineapple silk, the production of the fans are in the highest quality.
Sustainable wood, heritage fabrics from local weavers around the country are also used. Unique embellishments complete the sophisticated look of the Monchet Y Cia fans.
Some of the famous women gifted with Monchet Y Cia’s are Queen Sofia of Spain, Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar and A-list Hollywood actress Sarah Jessica Parker.
On August 23-25, 2013, the Monchet Y Cia fans will be available at the MaARTe 2013: Exhibition and Sale of Museum-Quality Philippine Arts & Craft, a project of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. This event will be held at the Rockwell Tent, Rockwell Center, Makati City from 10am-10pm.
Fans were used by women in the Spanish times to communicate with their suitors. Some examples:
If the woman is holding the fan hanging on her right hand, she is single. If the fan is hanging on her left hand, she is already taken.
If the woman is fanning furiously, it is like saying that she likes you.
If the woman intentionally drops the fan, it means that she trusts you.
If the woman covers her face with the fan, she wants you to follow her.
If the woman closed the fan abruptly, she is bored.
